| The Canadian AIDS Memorial Quilt is the collection of more than 500 individually hand-made panels, each a testament to the life of someone who has died of AIDS. If someone you love has died of AIDS, this is an opportunity to honour him/her by creating a panel for the Memorial Quilt.
| |
| Making the panel | |
| 1. Select durable, medium weight fabric for the background, preferably of cotton fibres
or as few stretch fibres as possible. This will help keep your design intact when folded and unfolded. 2. The background fabric should measure 1.07 metres by 2 metres (3'6" by 6'6"). Chalk out or pin a 3" border within the edges of your fabric (making the panel area 3' by 6'). Keep your finished design inside the 3' by 6' area; leave the extra 3" around it empty so your panel can be sewn together with other panels to make a 12 foot square Section of panels. Panels may be made either vertically or horizontally. 3. Plan your panel to reflect your fondest memories. You can paint, stencil, collage, use appliqué or other methods for the desired effect. You can also use photographs by photocopying them onto iron-on transfers and then ironing them onto the background cloth. Avoid using breakable items or glue, which cracks when it dries.
| When the panel is finished | |
1. Write a short description about the person you have memorialized including:
2. Contact the Director of the Board closest to you, geographically, for information on submitting your panel to become part of The Canadian AIDS Memorial Quilt.
